The University Athletics Department is once again partnering with God’s Pantry of Lexington to form the “Back Pack” community service program. For a fourth consecutive year, all UK coaches, student-athletes and staff will help pack and distribute food-filled Kroger bags to underprivileged youth in Fayette County.
Each month, God’s Pantry supplies UK Athletics with food and Kroger bags. A different team or department will then spend 15-20 minutes each week packing 150 bags full of non-perishable food items. Later in the week, the team/department will deliver the bags to three local Lexington elementary schools: Cassidy, Lansdowne and Picadome.
After the food is dropped off at each school, student-athletes spend anywhere from 30 minutes to a full hour mingling with elementary school children at lunch or recess.
So far this semester, the UK women’s basketball, swimming and diving, rifle and men’s basketball teams have participated in the Back Pack Program.
